FALL IN LOVE WITH FASHION... AGAIN

By Amy Choi

<< fashion + style

Love is at first sight - particularly on the runway. New York Fashion Week is a love fest for all fashionistas. With the wrap up of New York Fashion Week Fall 2010, fashionistas everywhere are making The List and checking it twice. The must-haves for the seasons to come are on our short list. Take a peek at our TOP PICKS OFF THE RUNWAY.

Some key trends to highlight during the shows were head-to-toe neutrals, the ever appearing color gray, abstract prints, and the rich texture of fabrics such as tweed, brocade, especially velour! However, the winning item is the jacket, whether it’s the cape, poncho, or redefined structured blazer. This jacket is sure to be the staple for this year’s Fall season. Its unique shape and any embellishments gives it character, perfect to throw over any passé outfit and make a bold statement.

3.1 Phillip Lim’s Ready to Wear Collection (featured in the images above) epitomized the must have “jacket” for the Fall. The collection expands from blazers with satin trims to wool-felt double capes to even a full-length gray shearling coat on the outside with patches of leather. Its an understatement to say that Phillip Lim continues to captivate different looks using a blend of rich fabrics, and often very opposite fabrics.

On the flip side of fabrics, color is key. Proenza Schouler’s Collection seemed to be pulled right out of those 3D books shelved away in your little one’s bookshelf. The collection highlighted many pieces: tops, bottoms and even dresses, in a funky, graffiti-inspired print fabric. Compared to the other collections, such as minimalist Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs who concentrated on a more subdued and neutral palette of colors and fabrics, Proenza takes an edgy approach with his abstracts and vampy looks. While the collection has some hard lines and dark colors, the looks come off very new-age chic.

Marc by Marc Jacobs’ Collection showcases a trending theme that has already caught on - the military look. Olive greens and dusted khakis appear as prominent colors in his military inspired collection of jackets, trenches, pants, blouses, and even a romper! As always, Marc by Marc Jacobs gives us some interesting, new twists on the modern blazer and blouse. Other details to note are the ruffles, lace, velvet and brocade fabric used throughout, prevalent among other collections as well.

For the moms on the go - both sophisticated and sassy - these looks and trends can be transformed from "run way to real way." The inspirations from the runway are just pointers to fuel your imagination. Go cadet-style with a military-inspired jacket and jeans for a relaxed day out in the park with your tot. Business meeting? Don out in a gray pant suit. If daring, add a ruffled blouse. Night out with the girls? Time travel back to your rockin’ days with abstract inspired printed shirts. While you don’t have to deck yourself from head to toe in prints (think less Picasso painting and more small graffiti art on a downtown New York City building). Best bet: wear the printed top under a fabulous new jacket. For out must have list, go to our stylish shopping blog, Shopaholic Mama.
